DO YOU KNOW ALL OF THE RISKS YOU ARE TAKING IF YOU SUPPORT UNDERAGE DRINKING?
According to Nebraska's Social Host Liability law:
- People who are killed or injured as a result of actions by an intoxicated minor can sue the person or business who provided the alcohol OR the social host who allowed the minor to consume alcohol in his/her home or on his/her property.
- In addition, people who have sustained property damage as a result of actions by an intoxicated minor can sue the person or business who provided the alcohol OR the social host who allowed the minor to consume alcohol in his/her home, or on his/her property.
- This holds adults and parents responsible for monitoring the activities and actions of youth in their homes and on their property.
Adults who provide alcohol to minors OR provide/allow a place for minors to drink are literally risking losing everything!
Can you afford to support underage drinking?
Don't provide alcohol to minors and don't drink & drive -- the life you save could be mine!
Are you aware of the potential health consequences of underage drinking?
- Teens who begin drinking before age 15 are 5 times more likely to become dependent on alcohol than those who start at 21.
- The average age that youth in Nemaha County begin drinking is 12.9 years.
- There are an estimated 3 million teens in America who are alcoholics.
- Underage drinking accounts for 12-20% of the U.S. alcohol market.
- 41% of Nemaha County 8th graders who have consumed alcohol said they got it from their parent, guardian or another relative.
- 70% of 8th graders and 85% of 12th graders who have drank did so at someone else's home.
Researchers have determined that brain development does not become complete until the early 20's.
- Kids now see some 300 TV ads for alcoholic beverages every year.
- In 2005, underage drinking cost Nebraskans $447 million in pain and suffering costs, medical costs, and work lost and other costs.
- In 2004, 1,008 youth ages 12-20 were admitted for alcohol treatment in Nebraska (accounting for 9% of all treatment admissions for alcohol abuse in the state).
Members of the NADAA Coalition care about the youth in our local communities and want to see them returning home safely at the end of every day!
Here are some easy things YOU can do to help make a difference!
- Be vigilant when it comes to underage drinking.
- Refuse to provide alcohol to minors AND refuse to provide minors a place to drink.
- Know where your child is and what he or she is doing. Know who your child is with.
- Know how much alcohol is in your home so you will know if any of it is suddenly missing.
- If you have concerns about your child, consult a behavioral or mental health professional.
